Ongoing Assessment

Students must be given ample learning opportunities to gain understanding of concepts or skills. However, these chances need to be meaningful. Students must be exposed to tasks that let them build on what they already know. Knowledge is the starway of creativity. And, in order to identify what students already know, an ongoing assessment in class is essential.

Not all students achieve the expected class objectives on a given time frame. In fact, sometimes, we, as teachers, ignore that. We can not just move on when most students of our class are "getting it." We need to implement strategies that help us check on each student´s performance. Checklists can be used, for example. And notes can be taken as we go around the clasroom. With that information, teachers can provide students with different learning materials or situations. Learning happens when discoveries are made. That is why teachers need to exactly know what the students have learned and what they are yet to discover.
