Math K Idea 1: Practicing Addition by Exchanging Flashcards

Objectives:
1. Adding numbers 1 through 5.
2. Saying addition sentences out loud.
3. (Social) Exchanging objects by necessity.

Materials:
Addition Flashcards
Role Cards

Activating Prior Knowledge:
Show a flashcard for students to complete the sentence. Two and Three is...or Four is Two and ...Whoever gets the answer right gets the flashcard.

Activity Instructions:
1. Tell kids they are going to work in groups in order to match addition flashcards.
2. Pass out "role cards," one for a "messenger" and another one for a "negotiator."
3. After all flashcards are handed out, have kids place them on the center of their tables.
4. Tell all messengers to ask their teammates which card they believe they do not need. Have them pick one and stand up to exchange a discarded flashcard. Teammates tell the negotiator whether they may change the flashcards.
5. When all groups match all the flashcards, cards may be dealt out again.

Assessment
1. As kids try and exchange cards, identify the kids who are able to get the cards that their group actually needs.
2. Go around the tables and ask the weakest kids to say the addition sentence by showing their fingers.
